Sir, What do I do sir? I need orders!!! SIR?

OK lets try this one :)
«War had come to the country, everyone had a sad face. Anywhere you looked, you would only see sad faces, no happiness to be found...... Hope all gone.......
- Captain, our men's moral is low, the enemy is advancing, and we havent received any orders from the commander....
- That is true liutenant, but then again, the last orders we reacived were to hold and stand our ground.
- Sir yes sir...
No news had come, the men were afraid and cold, but the captain said that they had to stay there..... And suddenly the attack begun......... There was nothing they could have done to predict it and they were caught by surprise. Explosions, gunshots everywhere and then a voice:
-CAPTAIN, we are under attack orders captain!
The captain felt a sudden headack: - I....... well......
-CAPTAIN, we need orders sir!
The captain's answer wouldn't get out of his mouth vbecause he knew this:
1) They didn't stood a chance against the attack and woud probably die but their orders were to stand and hold that ground
2)If he retreated the men would be safe but the position would be compromised to the enemy wich would give them a good point of strategy for the battle.
What should be the captain's order?
:) The main goal is to see your capability of choice and argumentation. Think well and present your arguments. Remember your in an extreme situation. Think well.

This is a tough question
This is a tough question :-). The truth is the action of an army depends on people following orders. If some people start making decisions on their own, ignoring the orders they have, things will get pretty disorganized and the whole strategy compromised, with a most likely defeat as a result. The fact is that people on the ground don't have a global perspective of what is going on.
On the other hand, sacrificing yourself and your men to follow a strategy designed by someone far away (and most likely in a safe place) seems a rather stupid course of action. However, you might be condemning other soldiers to death by not fulfilling your role in the battle. And, as a soldier, you must be prepared to die for your country (as they so often say in the movies).
My take on this: wars are a terrible way of sorting out conflicts, and most of them are totally unnecessary and fought for the wrong reasons. But if I was in such a situation and believed I was fighting for the right reasons, I think I would try to hold my ground and do my best.
WOW Very nice:)
Wow that was really nice inded professor =O. I do agree on you that wars are stupid and many time pointless..... But they are always appearing all over the world :(...... we can't do nothing but to sit and watch.
Nevertheless I do believe that things can change :).
Now talking about this situation. By your point of view you would try to stay and hold your ground. Ok, I wont post my idea so soon :p lets wait for more comments XD.
Anyway, the enemy would probably kill you all but maybe you would be able to hold the ground long enough so that allied forces would come OR, who knows? Maybe you would be able to drive back the enemy. You know, many times batles are not won by the number but by the estrategy or even the mens morale is enough to turn the tides of battle :D. Or if by the otherside the mens morale is broken the battle is almost lost. So what now? :p Theres always the chance you would get killed but at least you would be seen as a patriot captain :) but nevertheless a good point lets wait and see more comments :).
