What would you do if you were President of the United States?
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Mon, 01/12/2008 - 23:51.It's interesting to find out how children can ask for such simple things...
Just pay attention to what they say!

I HAVE A DREAM...
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Mon, 01/12/2008 - 23:39.I HAVE A DREAM...
In this multicultural world we live in it is always worth remembering Dr Martin Luther KIng and his message about treating others as equals. In fact, I think that WE ALL SHOULD SHARE HIS DREAM AND CREATE A BETTER WORLD!
Here is an interesting video that puts together past and present wishes!

Why so much copying and pasting?
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 14/10/2008 - 13:26.We believe our students can write interesting texts about many different things, so why not prove that you can do it? Try to write texts using your own words as much as possible!!!!
Do not forget that whenever you quote you must refer to the source you used!

A new school year
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 16/09/2008 - 13:56.Here we are once again for another school year. For some students it will be a complete new experience as it will be the first time they attend a secondary school. However, as everything in life, the problem lies on the first days... once you get the rhythm, everything will be different. This also applies for the ones who are not here for the first time.
The best thing to do is to organise yourself, think that there are priorities and never forget to enjoy school life as much as you can without jeopardising your final results.
Have fun!!!!!!

Philadelphia
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 03/06/2008 - 23:24.Today when I got home I turned on the TV and I could watch the last scenes of this extraordinary film (1993). It's worth watching it. It makes you think a lot about prejudice people have towards others may they be because of their sexual orientation, race, age, values, diseases, handicaps, etc... It makes you also think about the importance of life and how hard it is to watch people suffer... and how these dying people are so strong, more than you would ever think they could be...

Plastic surgery
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 13/05/2008 - 16:41.As you live in a world ruled by the need to have a great look and be fashionable, there are a lot of people who choose to go under plastic surgery to fit into this crazy world. You are always reading about famous people having plastic surgery performed on them and you will probably think "Why not me?". You look yourself in the mirror and you find out that your nose has to be changed, your belly needs some reshaping, and you would find an endless list of parts to be changed. Besides, what seems to be more worrisome is that an increasing number of young girls go under this kind of surgery, and all this for the sake of a "perfect" image.
Take a look at the following advice to be found in this link

Teenage idols
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Thu, 08/05/2008 - 10:48.I am a mother of a boy and a girl and I think that now more than ever before the world is becoming really dangerous mainly for the younger ones. Among many other negative things that are part of our world, yesterday I read a piece of news about Amy Winehouse, whom I find someone really weird. Of course you can say that if feels good listening to her songs but her very image is something that makes you think, a lot. Many singers and groups have created their image based on aspects that may eventually lead/ have led and will lead to misbehaviour and that is what worries me the most. Furthermore, children and teenagers are the ones that can be more easily influenced by this even when they have parent guidance.

About Group Assignments
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Sun, 09/12/2007 - 10:24.First I'd like to apologise for not having writen my first impressions on these group work assignments sooner. There were some drawbacks but it's never too late. And here they are!
First I'd like to thank all the groups that participated in this project and I'd like to tell you that the assignments are very interesting and show some hard work. Some of them were really quite a surprise and that's very positive. Of course, there are some better than others but life's like this.
The only thing I'd like to add and call your attention to is that you shouldn't plagiarise materials and what's more you should document all your sources. That's honest work!!!
See you around!!!!! :-)

Defining a teenager
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 15/05/2007 - 12:09.Defining a teenager is really a hard job! I was just trying to do it when I started browsing. Just read what I have just found! Interesting, right?
Defining teenagers
A Teenager is...
A person who can't remember to walk the dog but never forgets a phone number.
A weight watcher who goes on a diet by giving up candy bars before breakfast.
A youngster who receives his/her allowance on Monday, spends it on Tuesday, and borrows from his/her best friend on Wednesday.
Someone who can hear a song by Madonna played three blocks away but not his mother calling from the next room.
A whiz who can operate the latest computer without a lesson but can't make a bed.
A student who will spend 12 minutes studying for her history exam and 12 hours for her driver's license.
A youngster who is well informed about anything he doesn't have to study.

Teenage Time!
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 08/05/2007 - 12:21.Adolescence is a time of change and a turning point. You are neither a child nor an adult; you are somewhere in between.... Teenagers worry too much about how good they look, if they are accepted and recognised by their peers. But adolescence is also a time when you try to find out about yourself!!! What may happen is that you may find out things that are not very well accepted by others. Prejudice is something very difficult to fight against and I praise those that just stick to their "strictly myself, thanks!!!" The only important thing is that you must respect , like and learn to live with yourself. Your self-esteem is the most important thing and what makes you stand up and be ready for the coming obstacles.

Shopping Centres/Malls
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 24/04/2007 - 12:26.We really live in the age of compulsive shopping: Going to the Shopping Centres has replaced the traditional "going for a walk on the beach, going for a drive, or simply enjoying nature...
Whole families join together heading to these places where they hope to spend a nice time on a Sunday! Often what happens is that they get tired of all the noise, of all the squeaking of their young children, of all the mess inside the shops, of all the compulsive queueing for almost everything and the consequent disrespect in these situations, of all the...... When they get home they are much too tired to do a thing!!!!! So, what seemed to be a nice Sunday often becomes a dreadful one!!!!!!!
Did you know????
Indoor multi-vendor shopping is not a recent idea. Isfahan's Grand Bazaar, which is largely covered, dates from the 10th century A.D.

Completely astonished!!!!!!
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Tue, 06/03/2007 - 12:23.
It was really a nice surprise to find out that our students can do such interesting things when they are up to it. The images, the video/audio clips you have been posting are generally speaking very good! The only thing that probably you still avoid doing is writing your own sentences... but you will get used to it. It's only a question of time and work!
I just want to say that I'M EXTREMELY PROUD OF MY STUDENTS AND KEEP ON WORKING

The Death Penalty
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Fri, 19/01/2007 - 12:53.The Death Penalty
The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It violates the right to life. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to hinder crime more effectively than other punishments.

Foreign classmate/schoolmate
Submitted by Conceição Silva on Wed, 15/11/2006 - 12:40.Having a foreign classmate/schoolmate from an exchange programme may be an experience that you will never forget for the rest of your life.
You talk, you laugh and you get surprised with the things you can learn from a student coming from another country. He/She brings along a lot of new things: a different country with a different culture, often a different language, different habits, different attitudes... simply different!
